A lot has been said about Gal Gadot after her first appearance as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was a good tactic to present her before releasing the movie about her life and its beginning. My first encounter with wonder woman was in 2009 when I saw the animated movie and it was amazing. Portraying women as powerful Amazon warriors created to save the mankind from themselves in a pre-feminist era was indeed bold and beautiful. And very empowering.
The first live-action movie on wonder woman stars Gal Gadot as wonder woman and she looks the part with her perfect Central European looks, frame, height and accent she fits the role of a warrior. She has an added innocence which helped her to maintain the surprised look on her face throughout the movie when she slowly realises what mankind is truly capable of.
Wonder Woman is a journey of Diana, princess of the Amazons trained and raised on a sheltered island paradise to be an unconquerable warrior. Her life takes a turn when she meets Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), an American pilot and spy who tells her about the world war raging in the outside world. Diana who was raised listening to stories that they were created to help mankind decides to leave her home for the first time to fight alongside men in a war to end all wars. During this time she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.
Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman is a good cinematic experience with loads of VFX and action sequences. Recreating world war I and the 20th century London is visually appealing and brings a certain charm to the movie. The film, despite dealing with a serious issue, has witty dialogues and good comic timing by the supporting cast who becomes the team of Steve Trevor to help end the war.
The star cast is good and delivered a good performance, notably, Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremmer as Charlie, Elena Anaya as Dr. Poison and Saïd Taghmaou as Sameer. I still like the animated version better but the live-action one comes pretty close. Definitely worth watching! And I’m glad to see a good movie from DCEU as it keeps my expectations alive for the upcoming movie, Justice League.
