Movie Review – Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 – Fun and Entertaining

Rating: ***½

I attended the screening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 last night and I must tell you how it fares. Read on to find out more, without spoilers. I tried my best to avoid those.

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 follows the story of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his friends being the guardians of the galaxy and taking up odd jobs across different planets to help the government or the population there. On one such mission, GOTG were asked to protect some powerful batteries which belongs to the Sovereign – an alien race. However, Rocket (Bradley Cooper) steals the said batteries and GOTG are chased by the Sovereigns and this leads to some reunions and goodbyes.

Of course, like the first movie, in this movie too Peter Quill a.k.a Star-Lord and his friends save the galaxy yet again. The star cast and the new additions to it are good. Getting Kurt Russell to play Star-Lord’s father is pretty big and there’s also Sylvester Stallone, the leader of the Ravagers, however, Sylvester Stallone’s character had not been given lot of frame time but then it must be the groundwork for a meatier role in the third part. Hopefully.

Apart from a great star cast delivering great performances, the characters have also mastered the comic timing and sarcasm. The witty sarcastic dialogues maintained its standard in this movie too. The movie is properly paced despite the lengthy run time of 140 minutes.

Visually the movie has done a fab job and the special effects are outstanding. Baby Groot is as real as any other character in the movie. I’m not sure how Vin Diesel felt but I love baby Groot. He’s simply adorable and even the villains agree! The visualization of Ego’s (Kurt Russell) planet is beautiful and charming. The movie does reveal more about the main characters and do watch out for Nebula, there are some twists with her. Damn, it’s hard to write a review and not share any spoilers!

I never thought I’ll say this of any movie but the opening credits of this movie keeps you happily stuck to your chairs. Do not miss the opening or end credits, yes there’s an end credit scene, actually there are 5 of them spread across the very lengthy end credits. The story-line can get a little predictable but then I was expecting that as the biggest spoiler of it is actually present in the title of the movie.

I loved the first part and liked the second part. Go for it for complete entertainment, great VFX, refreshing take on emotional scenes, and to watch a team which fights and bickers among themselves like nemesis but calls itself a family. So to sum it all up in one line – I AM GROOT!
