Sernyaa – Authentic Tibetan cuisine in Bombay

Rating: ****1/2

If you are craving for a nice, tasty, authentic Tibetan cuisine, head out to Sernyaa in Oshiwara, Andheri. The place serves the best Tibetan cuisine in the city.

Sernyaa is a small restaurant situated on the end of the busy Link Road, a little ahead of Infiniti mall, Andheri. It’s a hole in the wall kind of place with very limited seating. If you are visiting the place for the first time you might miss it a couple of times. Also note, the food is tasty and the place is a hit with people who know about it so always expect a queue outside.

Coming to food, I have not tried everything on the menu YET but I can assure you that most of the items taste good. The host/ owner of the place is warm and cordial and gives excellent suggestions when asked for his recommendations. I have been to Sernyaa couple of times and liked the food each time I ate there.

Must try is the momo, I have tried the steam momos and the pan fried ones and personally liked the pan fried ones better. I have tried Bamboo rice and Sakya rice, the latter isn’t on the menu but it’s the secret recipe from the kitchen of owner’s mother. The rice is cooked on charcoal with chicken, spices and cooking wine. Needless to say, it was yumm.12647873_10208253609555080_809532576_n

In main course, I have tried, Sakya Jhasha which is made of pan fried chicken in dry red chillies and sesame oil; Tashiding Jhasha which is made of chicken, baby corn and mushroom meat ball cooked in hot sesame sauce. Sernyaa is also the first place in Bombay where I tried Thukpa. It’s a traditional Tibetan dish made of clear soup with noodles, vegetables and meat. The first time I ate Thukpa, it was in McLeod Ganj and though that’s the best one so far, Sernyaa is quite close.

The ambience of the place is nothing to speak of. Go there to simply eat some really tasty Tibetan food and that’s about it. The place means business and you wouldn’t mind the bill at all as its pocket friendly. The meal for 2 costs around 800 bucks. I know I’m going to be a regular there.
